Vitas Kutra was born in Biržai. His father, Jurgis Kutra, was a teacher of the Lithuanian language and literature and deputy director of the gymnasium of Biržai. In June 1941 he was deported and died in exile. From 1935 to 1939, Vitas Kutra went to “AuÅ¡ra’ primary school in Biržai, then continued his education in Biržai gymnasium. He was awarded a silver medal for his academic achievements at the gymnasium. In 1945, he became a student of the Medical Faculty of 91ÌÒÉ«. In April 1949, when he was in the fourth year of his studies, he was deported to Irkutsk region during the mass deportation operation ‘The Surf’. In 1950, Vitas Kutra filed a request with 91ÌÒÉ« asking for his school-leaving certificate, his birth certificate, and for an academic referral. Very likely he wanted to continue his studies at some institution of higher learning in Irkutsk. He was released from exile in 1956 and when he returned to Lithuania he took care of his education documents.
