International Research Projects

Between Choice and Determinism: Cultural Variations in Experiencing and Conceptualizing Free Will, Luck, and Randomness. The project co-funded from the EU Structural Funds (Nr. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712). Team: Prof. A. Beinorius (team-leader), Dr V. Silius, Dr R. Berni奴nas, lect. V. Dranseika.

The project aims at raising the interdisciplinary qualifications and academic excellence of researchers through a transcultural empirical study of the concepts and experiences of free will and choice in order to enrich European philosophical discourse and methodology. The task of the project is to carry out a transcultural textual-historiographical and empirical study in order to reveal the connection between the theoretical-intellectual traditions and everyday conceptions of free will and choice in different cultural contexts of contemporary Europe and Asia.

Educational Policy and Educational Culture. 2019鈥�2020. Prof. Dr L. Duoblien臈.

The main aim of the research in 2020 was to develop the analysis of the tendencies of educational politics in regard with the educational culture. Some data of theoretical and empirical research were published in research papers written by L. Duobliene虈, I.Ivanavi膷臈, I.Stonkuvien臈, V. Targamadz臈, R. 沤elvys. The papers were published in Lithuanian and international journals. The staff of the Institute of Educational Sciences presented their research findings at different national/ international conferences held in Lithuania and foreign countries (Hungary, Kazakhstan, Poland, Turkey et al). All the international visits were supported by 91桃色 and/or Lithuanian Research Council.

The aim of the project is to investigate the trajectories of relations between thought, image, word and sound in contemporary philosophy of education. The concept of multimodality was integrated into 21th century鈥檚 philosophy of education from communication theory. Multimodality describes communication practices in terms of the textual, aural, linguistic, spatial, and visual modes. The object of this project is to investigate mainly the philosophical sources justifying the possibility of such a turn by the analysis of the trajectories of relations between thought, image, word and sound.

The aim of the project is to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of EU countries鈥� education systems. An integrated secondary analysis of the data of international studies of educational achievements (PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS, 2003鈥�2018) and macro-data of the EU countries is being planned. For a more thorough analysis of Lithuanian education merging the databases of the assessment of achievements in lower secondary education (PUPP) with the state maturity examination (VBE) is to be done.

The aim of the project is to research a process of raising a "New Man" in the Lithuanian schools during the late Soviet period. It seeks with the assistance of interdisciplinary approach (combining history, anthropology, educational sciences etc.) to present the notion of "New man" and its genesis both in theoretical and comparative contexts. The analysis of textbooks, education programs, plans and methodical documents, pedagogical press and other historical sources will be implemented, and then in the scope of this project we will analyse how formation of the "New Soviet Man" was influenced by the ideological clich茅s and educational ideals of that time, which are reflected in the organisational process of educational system, in the educational content, its principles and methods. While analysing transformation of Soviet school we aim to determine, if educational elements, which have formed Soviet Man, were transferred to educational practices of post-Soviet schools in Lithuania.

The project aims to implement the STEM education reform by integrating modern digital technologies in the development of STEM and transforming the STEM subject model into an integrated STEM (iSTEM) model. This approach to the development of STEM education is based on the following assumptions: the importance of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and science-based educational activities; pragmatist attitude to schooling and the relevance of project and problem teaching methods; the continuing digitalization of the social and scientific space and the use of effective methods of informatics education in STEM. The research philosophy of the project is based on the consistent implementation of the transformation of the STEM educational model through the subject of computer science (computer science) as the core of such transformation - from integrating informatics into the 鈥渃lassic鈥� STEM teaching model with a focus on using digital technologies to the integrated STEM informatics as informatics integrated into the practical activities of students in the iSTEM learning space.

In 2020, the main data collection was performed: 1) Cultural Literacy Learning Program (CLLP) was implemented in schoos at pre-primary, primary and secondary levels; 2) Students classroom discussions were recorded, transcribed and coded; 3) students鈥� artefacts with captions were collected; 4) teachers and students鈥� questionaires were performed; 5) Virtual Gallery of students鈥� artefacts was created; 6) Students authored Manifesto on Cultural Literacy was developed. Several science populiarisation publications were prepared and published; some video short films on implementation of Cultural Literacy Learning Program (CLLP) in Lithuanian schools were created.

MOST supports European school students and citizens in developing science knowledge, transversal skills and competences in working scientifically. MOST enables and encourages its target groups to pursue scientific careers and long-term, will raise the numbers of scientists in Europe. To achieve this, our Consortium of 23 partners from 10 European countries (higher education institutions, schools, non-formal education providers, ministries, municipalities and enterprises) proposes a powerful Open Schooling idea. The project opens up formal science education and establishes partnerships between schools and their communities (families, science education providers, citizens, businesses, etc.) to work jointly on environmental school-community-projects (SCPs). These participatory projects directly respond to the needs and values of those involved, benefit the communities as a whole and make schools agents of community well-being. MOST鈥檚 learning impact is boosted through an educational research-based approach that raises interest in science, scientific literacy and environmental responsibility.

The overall objectives of the project are:1) To establish Regional Innovation Hubs as sites of moderating and multiplying school-to-school mentoring structures (dyads or triads) to scale up the digital innovation on local, regional, and national level and across the countries. 2)To establish co-creation teams and national stakeholder networks to enhance the collaboration between the universities, schools, industry partners and policy stakeholders to address the challenge of bringing rapidly developing technologies to schools. 3) To build a knowledge base of evidence-informed pedagogy-grounded technology-enhanced learning (TEL) strategies and whole-school peer-learning methodologies. 4) To develop a locally, methodologically and technologically adaptable whole-school mentoring model that embraces both inter- and intra-school levels and that integrates continuous monitoring methodology including novel evaluation approaches and the Learning Analytics Toolbox. 5) To co-create an incentive scheme as part of the model for schools and teachers to support them in acting as mentors and mentees 6) To integrate the results of the project into an elaborated policy recommendations package that includes a handbook and a toolkit on how to establish Regional innovation hubs and implement school-to-school, whole-school mentoring model in other countries with different educational policy, socio-cultural and digital maturity contexts.

The purpose of the project is to build a body of knowledge and enhance e-learning tool, which allows promoting innovative, interactive and inclusive learning of Mathematics and Computational Thinking through the systematic exchange of experience between Nordic-Baltic Partners countries with different cultural background. The project is enhancing and expanding teacher and researcher networks with a direct influence on improving learning of Maths and CT at schools. At the end of the project culturally connected and relevant approaches and resources for learning mathematics and computational thinking skills will be provided. These approaches should be easy to adapt and utilise in schools. A repository of concrete methods, examples and materials for teaching the topics will be provided via a global Internet resource.

The project enriches the higher education curricula and training of preservice teachers in the NordicBaltic region focussing on digitalisation and Computational Thinking (CT) in order to promote development of XXI century competences. This two-year project is a starting point of long-term interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration towards developing Nordic approach to integrate computational thinking (CT) in K-12 education. In this project, our aim is to build common understanding about CT among the collaborators and widen our thinking about how to include future technologies (e.g., AI, autonomous transportation, cyber security) into CT through perspectives from different fields, such as educational sciences and computer science. The project involves schools and universities as participating institutions. Through this project, we are enhancing professional development of teachers who are interested in applying CT and maker education into their classrooms, and building networks among participating institutions. As outcome of the project, we develop a versatile assessment tool, which can be used in various cases beyond different conditions (e.g., curriculum, activity, pupils鈥� grade level and interests). In this way, we tackle the challenges of current effort to integrate CT into school curriculum.

Our objective is to transform (future) STEM teachers鈥� grasp of teaching standard topics. To achieve that we will rethink and reshape the delivery of fundamental STEM subject knowledge in the context of key competence development. Future teachers need to be encouraged to refrain from teaching with the sole purpose to transfer knowledge about a single STEM subject, isolated from other STEM subjects. This simply does not live up to todays and tomorrows challenges anymore. They need to understand the relation between knowledge, skills and attitudes, how they affect each other and how they have an effect on their students鈥� learning experience and personal life. They also need to see that STEM subjects are relevant to our lives and our societies and that they are linked to each other. To achieve this objective we will develop teaching modules to be used in HE programmes for future STEM teachers, covering all STEM disciplines and exemplarily dealing with topics from each discipline (e.g. light representing physics education, algorithms representing informatics or the periodic system representing chemistry). Each module applies various tested and proven innovative educational approaches, such as digital learning or real-life contextualisation. As STEMkey places a strong focus on establishing and nourishing a strong strategic partnership, network options will play an important role and we plan to link to existing initiatives on national and European level and thus embed our results within existing relevant 鈥渒nowledge pools鈥� (e.g. digital online repositories) and Europe鈥檚 STEM education landscape. The STEMkey Partnership Platform serves as main operation base for our project and the partnership. It serves many purposes: external promotion, internal and external communication, dissemination and multiplying results to a wide user group.

The objective of the Development of STEAM education project is to lead European schools in the improvement of existing STEAM approaches, to guide them fostering the young Europeans鈥� interest, skills, and career in maths, science, engineering, and technology as well as arts, and to provide the schools with the necessary toolbox to engage their students, teachers and other members of the community in STEAM-related activities by developing an appropriate STEAM school strategy. Providing adequate guidance and underpinning innovative activities to be developed at the national level, the Project will expand a network of STEAM schools involving not only teachers, administrators, but also other stakeholders, e.g., STEAM/research/ non-formal education centres.

Teacher training for Data Literacy & Computer Science competences shall conduct activities in Austria, Germany, and Lithuania, focusing on the transferability of digital education competences. The consortium aims to specifically identify how data literacy and competences on artificial intelligence (AI) can become structurally implemented into the training of teachers, both in the course of their university education and for in-service teachers in STEAM in order to reduce the digital gap. Big Data processes and AI have already changed the economic, social, and political environment for people of all backgrounds. Holistic digital education therefore needs to be accessible to all European citizens. This can most effectively be achieved through the respective educational systems.鈥� Therefore, pre-service and in-service teachers and policy makers shall have the opportunity to co-create best practices on how these future skills can be anchored in the national systems and in European strategies. It shall be tested how modules and formats of data literacy,鈥痗omputer science (CS) and AI education can be adapted for teacher training so that differences in availability of computer science education can be balanced across European countries. The main target groups involved are pre-service and in-service teachers as well as policy makers in education (national and sub-national ministries, agencies, curriculum-setting bodies). Through a participatory approach rooted in systems thinking and action research, the hypothesis, the measures, and their transferability shall be tested and evaluated in three project cycles. This collaborative process shall produce a continuous exchange and a metric to evaluate the status quo of data literacy in computer science education, leading to a European teacher education monitor. Based on these findings, curriculum recommendations and a policy framework for data literacy and AI shall be introduced to the appropriate European stakeholders.

3C4life tests an all-digital STEM teacher environment with an occupational advancement concept with four innovative elements: 1) A sequential process of triggers gradually and sustainably ensuring the involvement of STEM teachers in occupational advancement: low threshold attraction, supported activation, shared advancement; 2) Unfolding of the enormous variety of vertical and horizontal career perspectives; 3) Needs-driven competence development through co-shaping processes; 4) Professional advancement through communities of practice. Through this complementarity, teachers can tailor their career to their very own needs and pin-point update their teaching. Thus, they become motivated agents rather than dulled consumers in a lifelong continuum of learning and teaching.

E-Teach - Improvement of Teaching Techniques by Eye Trekking in Technology Enhanced Classrooms. Erasmus Plus KA2 (No. 2017-1-TR01-KA201-046748). 2017鈥�2020. Coordinator 鈥� Ankara University. Institutional coordinator 鈥� Prof. V. Dagien臈 (VU).
The e-Teach Project aims to discover teaching techniques and methods in educational technology equipped classrooms (ETECs) in order to meet the training requirements of other teachers. e-Learning contents are designed and developed for this purpose. The skills and methods needed for teaching lessons in ETECs are revealed by the comparison of the eye movement behaviors between expert and novice teachers. The outputs of the project; on-line course contents are hosted on Bilgeis MOOC platform which is co-funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey.
Three outputs that are produced during the project are the 鈥淚n-class technology interaction practices鈥� for three different countries. Firstly, METU and DamaSistem started data collection and analysis by using their previous experiences. After completing the data collection, the data collection and analysis knowledge were transferred to other partners with a training activity that were organized in 陌taly. Consequently, University of Salerno, and 91桃色 collected their data.

THEE - Teaching in Higher Education Effectively via Eye Tracking. Erasmus Plus KA2 (2019-1-TR01-KA203-077213). 2019鈥�2022. Coordinator 鈥� Ankara University. Institutional coordinator 鈥� Assoc. Prof. E. Jasut臈 (VU).
The objective of the project is to improve teaching and classroom management skills by studying eye movements and translating them into data that contributes to more efficient lecturing. In order to achieve this, eye movements of lecturers and students during class will be recorded with special glasses. The analysis of eye data will then give direct information about the cognitive process of lecturers, allowing them to improve their teaching skills.
At the end of the project, computer-aided learning content will be designed and developed to facilitate the rapid transfer of knowledge and skills that academicians should acquire.
Collecting data through eye-tracking is relatively new in educational research studies, which makes the project stand out as innovative since it will allow overcoming the limitations of educational research studies that generally use self-reported data.

Objectives of the project: 1) to improve pedagogical skills and competencies of future teachers that are related to the teaching and training of various aspects of CT; 2) to develop a deeper understanding of future teachers in CT. The methodology is based on an approach to develop and test a set of subject/educational environment specific educational modules with a possibility of integration into future teacher curricula. The motivation is based on the ongoing European reform of approaches to STEM education and, therefore, the needs and importance of the educational aspects related to CT. The project focuses on curriculum development activities for the education and training of future teachers. Target group 鈥� future teachers involved in STEM education and in particular those who concerned with CT aspects and appropriate curriculum development. Another target group is future teachers of preschool institutions (kindergartens), primary schools, lower and upper secondary schools of various subjects including foreign languages, art and humanities. The project results in a set of modules developed for training future teachers on various aspects of CT as related to STEM project-based education. The developed modules are self-sufficient, which allows them to be included in study programs, and form a part of the coherent CT curriculum for STEM and related subjects.

The integrated approach of STEAM will help to make computational thinking more concrete and connected to the real-world and therefore more understandable for children. The focus will be on the process of problem-solving instead of the use of (expensive) technological tools and materials. So teachers will be supported to teach 鈥榗omputational thinking鈥� with easily applicable and accessible materials and tools.

The Institute of Educational Sciences of the Faculty of Philosophy of 91桃色, partnering with foreign universities, is implementing the GEM (Empower Girls to Embrace Their Digital and Entrepreneurial Potential) project, which aims to reveal the potential of girls' digital literacy and entrepreneurial potential in STEM activities. As one of the project activities, the school 鈥濻mart City 2020鈥� was organized at the faculty on August 3鈥�6. The school's program aim was to motivate girls to pursue a career in STEM subjects and to encourage active participation in European research, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital literacy. Throughout the week, 30 girls aged 12鈥�14 participated in various STEAM activities, discussing the careers of entrepreneurs and researchers.

Research Council of Lithuania. Philosophical Sources and Problems of Multimodal Education (S-MIP-17-37). Prof. J. Rubavi膷ien臈. 2017鈥�2020.

The concept of multimodality was integrated into late 20^th鈥� early 21^st century鈥檚 philosophy of education from communication theory. Multimodality describes communication practices in terms of the textual, aural, linguistic, spatial, and visual modes. The object of this project is to investigate mainly the philosophical sources justifying the possibility of a turn towards multimodal education by the analysis of the trajectories of relations between thought, image, word and sound. The problem of the intersection between thought and image in the contemporary philosophy of education corresponds with the problem of the clash between modern and postmodern paradigms of upbringing.
In 2020, in the framework of this project, one monograph and one article were published and one paper at the international conference was presented.

In 2020, in the framework of this project, the student made the presentation on the topic 鈥淭he Concept of the Crystal of Time in Deleuze鈥檚 Philosophy of Cinema鈥� in English at Rubavi膷ien臈鈥檚 seminar with Erasmus students during the course Philosophy and Arts: Deleuzian Studies, 11 December 2020.

Research Council of Lithuania. Responsibility of Religious Person: Lithuanian Rabbinical Thought between Rationalism and Hassidic Mysticism (S-MIP-17-35). Assoc. Prof. A. K. Pa啪臈rait臈. 2017鈥�2019.

The project is focused on Lithuanian Judaism, in particular on Lithuanian Mussar movement. In the beginning of 20th century, in Lithuanian 鈥渃orners鈥�, such as Tel拧iai, Kelm臈, Slobodka of Kaunas et al., in the Yeshiva worlds enclosed and Mussar literature studying rabbonim and students created alternative reality, the value of which became apparent after the Catastrophe. On the one hand, the rationalist (or mystic?) anthropology of Lithuanian Mussar thinkers enables identification of Jewish identity, as well as responsibility, as the most important feature of election. On the other hand, Hasidic perspective (in some aspects close to Christian outlook) enables to pose the question of responsibility of religious person in completely different way. In 2020, based on the project investigations, one monograph was published.

The aim of the project is to thoroughly investigate, with the help of contemporary theories of formal logic and information technologies, the most significant and complex medieval system of modal syllogism formulated and published in the fourteenth century by French logician Jean Buridan. The main goal of this project is to determine the relationship between traditional and modern theories of modal logics by developing new and adapting existing models of traditional logic, preparing them for the relevant formal comparison, and running the mechanical comparison of the arguments recognized as valid in each theory with the help of a computer equipped with the software specially designed or adapted for this purpose.

The Mythophilosophical Lithuanian Discourse: Mick奴nas, 艩liogeris, Vy膷inas (UAB 3T-Transfers, MTS-250000-839). Prof. M. P. 艩aulauskas. 2017鈥�2024.

The project aims to identify basic parameters of the mythophilosophical Lithuanian discourse and thereby to enable the disclosure of its specificity both in terms of (a) Lithuanian philosophical heritage and (b) Lithuanian academic discourse of nowadays. The basic problematics of the project cover (1) methodological principles of mythophilosophical Lithuanian legacy and their enactment in contemporary academic writings as well as (2) vital mythophilosophical attributes in the undertakings of Vincas Vy膷inas, Algis Mick奴nas and Arvydas 艩liogeris.

The project is organized by the Philosophy Department of Jagiellonian University (Krakow) and is the part of the program "Narodowy Program Roswoju Humanistyki".The aim of the project is to provide a detailed analysis of manuscripts and printed sources that reveal the state of political, ethical and logical thought in the region of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during 16-18th centuries. The participants of the project are the researchers of the history of philosophy from Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania. The project has started in January, 2018 and will end in January, 2023.
Based on the project investigations, a paper at the international and national conferences were presented: Pabijutait臈沤. Manuscripts and Printed Theses on Practical Philosophy contained in 91桃色 Library. Polonica Philosophia Orientalia: Digitalisation Priorities. Kiiv, 07鈥�08 December 2019.

Although the postmodern culture can be considered as a post-secular culture, the character of this post-secularity is not yet sufficiently understood. It is not clear what form, in a changed cultural situation, could and/or should acquire the religious images, experiences and practices. The aim of this project is to find out, what forms are acquired by religious content in such areas of contemporary culture as ethics, aesthetics and political ideology, what role interreligious and inter-confessional dialogue plays (or could play) in the process of globalisation that prevails in contemporary world. A large part of the research is devoted to the analysis of the ontological foundations of above-mentioned manifestations of post-secularity.
In 2020, the project research was caried out in two directions: 1) the research of the post-secular implications of the philosophical and theological conceptions of Rudolf Bultamann, Karl Jaspers, Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt as well as of the Death-of-God theology; 2) the research of the situation of Muslim communities in post-communist East European countries. In 2020, based on the project investigations, one monograph and four articles were published.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the individual and environmental factors that promote the child's development and learning and their interaction. In 2020, individual (cognitive, personal) and environmental (teachers' expectations, teaching strategies, parental involvement) factors in the learning achievements of primary and lower secondary school students were studied. Attention on self-regulation of preschool children and connections of cognitive abilities with children's use of electronic media were given and also early development of children: profiles of cognitive abilities and socio-emotional behaviour were evaluated.

The aim of this research is to reveal the factors of psychosocial interactions and decisions made, as well as their possible consequences, to identify adolescent criminal risk and protective factors. In 2020, peculiarities of the image perceived by law enforcement officers and peculiarities of decision-making in the execution and investigation of crimes were examined. There was a study of psychological factors influencing the peculiarities of alcohol and other substance use carried out. Determination of interactions of components of biopsychosocial functioning in Lithuanian elderly people were studied. It was work done on research methodology: adaptation and standardization instruments for the assessment of memory, personality and mental disorders.

Children鈥檚 and Adolescents鈥� Internet Use in Lithuania: Possibilities and Risks Tendencies in EU Context. S-MIP-17-1/LSS-250000-1087. Assoc. Prof. N. Grigutyt臈. 2017鈥�2020.

The aim of the project is to evaluate changes of the 9-17-year-old children鈥檚 Internet use in Lithuania and other EU countries since 2010 and to reveal the mechanism of children鈥檚 Internet use on their psychological functioning. Project objectives: 1) to determine the overall and country specific trends of Internet use of the 9-17-year-old children; 2) to discover the mechanism of 9-17-year-old children鈥檚 Internet use and psychological functioning. Activities, which were held in the project: Analysis of the literature to reveal assumptions and current outcomes of children鈥檚 Internet; the selection of constructs of the survey; finalizing questionnaires with partners and translation of the instrument to Lithuanian language.

It is planned to analyze the readiness to respond to the suicide crisis in ten Lithuanian municipalities with the highest suicide rates and to provide practical recommendations for the improvement of the existing system.

Psychosocial Stress Reactions to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Research-based Coping Recommendations. P-COV-20-10. Prof. E. Kazlauskas. 2020.
There is a growing worldwide concern about the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic is associated with multiple stressors, such as fear about the health of a loved one, insecurity about the future, stress associated with job-difficulties, or unemployment among the others. The current project aims to analyse the psychological impact of the pandemic on adolescents and adults, including healthcare workers from the perspective of stress responses and resilience. The current project delivered recommendations that were targeted towards mitigating the negative effects of the pandemic on mental health and well-being. Furthermore, the project contributed to an evidence-based response planning to the pandemic. The results included:

Distance Education of Children during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Threats and Opportunities from an Ecosystem Perspective. S-COV-20-11. Prof. R. Jusien臈. 2020.

Due to the change in the educational process caused by COVID-19 pandemic and having moved it from the immediate medium to a distant one, the roles, interactions, engagements, as well as the environment, content and nature of the individuals involved in the education process, i.e., children, parents and teachers, has inevita- bly changed as well. It is an unparalleled experience that provides the researchers in the fields of education, psychology, social work, sociology and medicine with an opportunity to comprehensively analyse the educational challenges to the educational process itself and its participants and examine the threats and opportunities posed to physical and mental health, safety and learning success of pre-school and children in grades 1鈥�8. The research conducted is important in identifying threats and anticipating solutions and opportunities for the future application and development of distance education.

Fake News Susceptability among Older Adults: Factors and Possible Consequences. (S-MIP-20-11/(1.78) SU-528). Assoc. Prof. V. Pakalni拧kien臈. 2020鈥�2022.

Digital technologies have led to the mass use of social networks, thus creating an excellent environment for the spread of fake news in political communication, which in turn jeopardizes democratic processes and confidence in democratic institutions. Older people using social networks are potentially a particularly vulnerable group as they often have poorer IT skills. This study aims to analyze the factors and consequences of older people's trust in fake news. To achieve the intended goal, a combination of correlational and experimental research strategy and computer modeling will be used in this project. The study will include people aged 50 and over. We are planning to assess older people's trust in fake news, media and internet usage, personality traits, cognitive functioning, trust in democratic institutions, and the links between all these factors.

A Comparative Study of Well-Being and Its Determinants among Older Adults in the Baltic States. S-GEV-20-9. Assoc. Prof. A. Kairys. 2020鈥�2021.
There is no doubt about demographic ageing being a global mega-trend reshaping contemporary societies. Recent research findings also suggest that for some groups observed decrease of well-being in later life is more profound and is atributed to their life histories. Thus, the aim of this project is to analyze the well-being and its determinants among vulnerable groups of older adults in Lithuania by applying life course and biopsychosocial approaches and utilizing the data collected in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) wave 7 and comparing results to other Baltic States.

Psychosocial and Individual Factors of Optimal Employee Functioning in the Context of Working from Home. S-MIP-20-1. Assoc. Prof. J. Lazauskait臈-Zabielsk臈. 2020鈥�2022.
The project aims to analyse psychosocial and individual factors of optimal employee functioning when working from home. This topic is of particular relevance considering the rapidly rising popularity of flexible work design when all or a part of employee functions are performed out of office. This question is particularly timely since flexible work design is considered a central element in the EU employment strategy (EC, 2010) and the number of employees working from home is rapidly increasing (Eurofound & ILO, 2017; Vos and van der Voordt, 2001). Despite that, research on it is still at its infancy both in Europe (Van Steenbergen et al., 2018) and Lithuania (Nakro拧ien臈 et al., 2019). Therefore, this project sets the following objectives: 1) to identify psychosocial and individual factors of optimal employee functioning when working from home; 2) to develop a research model for an empirical study along with a comprehensive instrument for measuring the study variables; 3) collect empirical data using cross-sectional and daily diary approaches, and to analyse the static and dynamic role of individual and psychosocial factors for optimal employee functioning in terms of employee performance, work-life balance and well-being.

International Research Projects

Mutual funds Taiwan-Latvia-Lithuania cooperation project School-Aged Children鈥檚 Internet Use in Relation to Socioemotional Development and Parenting Practices in Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan: a longitudinal study. S-LLT-18-3. Prof. Dr R. Jusien臈 (principal researcher of Lithuanian team). 2017鈥�2020.

2020 was the last stage of the study, Time 2: more than 210 children and their parents who participated at the first stage of longitudinal study also took part at the second stage. There was also the preliminary analysis of Time 2 data in each country separately, and also using the joint data set all three countries. The third joint meeting of the researchers鈥� teams was organized online. There were several presentations of Time 1 and Time 2 results at national conferences and preparation of publications as well as the final conference of the project.

It is a project specially designed to help address problems of mental health and lack of wellbeing in students in higher education. The mental health and wellbeing of youth in Europe is a high concern and this group includes students, who similar to other young people, often suffer anxiety, depression, attempted suicide and serious mental health problems. If not addressed, many of these problems can continue onto later life, in employment, family life and society and can also negatively affect day to day activities of study, progression and achievement in study, participation in social life and activities, networking and developing interpersonal skills. The aim is to enhance innovation in HE response to student mental wellbeing by enabling learning, implementation of projects and practice to address mental wellbeing issues in HE and with this, to increase the evidence base with the highest quality information and materials to allow HEIs to make informed choices about methods to respond to student wellbeing issues.

Research capacity increases by supporting a high proportion of ECIs and especially female and ITC researchers. Shared knowledge is disseminated to policy makers and stakeholders. The network promotes collaborative funding applications and meets societal challenges connected to mental health. TREATME paves the way for the matching of mental health research to the needs of young people in Europe.

In Europe, millions of children experience abuse or neglect at the hands of those who should care for them. Yet, how many of these children get help, which services they receive by which agency remains largely unknown. The proposed project addresses this gap by creating a network of experts in child maltreatment and relevant stakeholders and links them in working groups, in order to promote the development of a rigorous, consistent, and comparable methodology for the collection of surveillance data on child maltreatment and maltreatment-related fatalities. Researchers, policymakers, administrators and practitioners will identify best-practice methods of surveillance and recommend efficient ways of implementing them across Europe. Importantly, this network will invite youth and adult survivors of child maltreatment to collaborate in all working group decision-making processes.

Research in the field of the history of sociology and analysis of the theoretical discourse was continued. The catching-up development of post-communist countries was analysed in the long-run synchronic and diachronic comparative perspective. Comparative historical sociological research was continued. Aim of the study: by drawing socioecological maps to reveal the extent and nature of PWD participation in community life and to compare it with the participation of persons without disabilities. Method (qualitative): socioecological maps of lives of different community members. The theoretical basis: methodological principles of ecological systems theory and P. Bourdieu theory. The ecological maps were drawn by research participants and focused on places they visit, services they receive, and contacts or relationships they create. Each eco map was supplemented with an interview of the person.
Major findings: (a) the ecological map allowed identifying the places visited by PWD and the nature of the contacts made there, (b) the places where group home residents and other members of the community receive services are similar, but c) in the socioecological maps drawn by community members the work environment and working relations are particularly prominent, which has not been observed in the eco-maps of PWD, (d) despite that community services received by PWD and other community members are similar in their type they do differ in their content. It may be determined by the different abilities and thus the needs of people with disabilities and people without disabilities, e) in contrast to the lives of other members of the community, sometimes services still 鈥渃ome鈥� to the group homes of PWD: f.i., it is not the person who comes to the hairdresser, but the hairdresser comes to a group home. Such dynamics indicate institutional traditions, sometimes transferred to the group living facilities during the process of deinstitutionalization.

The aim of the Project is to analyze how the economic crisis caused by Covid-19 affects the employment and poverty situation of the population, the extent to which the newly introduced social protection measures were in line with the changing situation, their long-term impact and to provide evidence-based recommendations to public policy makers.

International Research Projects

European Commission. EUROMOD - Microsimulation Tool for Modelling the Impact of Policy Measures. Dr. J. Navick臈 (principal researcher). From 2017 to present

The project aims to regularly update and maintain EUROMOD 鈥� a tax-benefit microsimulation tool for the 28 EU member states. As an output of the project in 2020 an annual report on Lithuania was prepared, the Lithuanian component of the model and data updated up to 2020.

The project contributes to the understanding of labour market in three respects: it provides a wide battery of tests to an important hypothesis concerning the origins of labour market inequality in a wide, comparative context across countries; application of several methodological innovations (concerning estimation techniques and identification strategies) as well as methodological diversity (econometrics, simulations and experiments); it will separate the role of the supply side factors (on the side of the employers) from demand side factors (the working time flexibility to combine personal and professional life).
