Germanic and Romance Literary and Cultural Texts. Prof. Dr. R. Rudaityt臈.2010鈥2020.

The department (in cooperation with the departments of French and German Philology as well as the Centre of Scandinavian Studies) has been carrying out investigation of literary trends, genres and problems of poetics, the development of literary traditions, the relationship of literary texts with Philosophy, Aesthetics, Psychology, Sociology and other theoretical systems. Some of the academic staff has been continually doing research in the field of the history of Germanic literatures and literatures in Romance languages and publishing articles on the related issues.

Germanic, Romance and Baltic Language Studies. Prof. Dr. Habil. A. Usonien臈. 2010鈥2020.

The linguists of the department carry out this research in close collaboration with their colleagues based at the Departments of German Philology, the Lithuanian language and the Centre of Scandinavian Studies. The focus of the research is on the synchronic and diachronic analysis of language-specific features characteristic of the grammatical, lexical and semantic structure of the languages under study. The range of research methods used and theoretical approaches followed varies greatly: from purely descriptive to functional, from cognitive to socio-linguistic, from quantitative to qualitative analysis of authentic language data.

Realizations of Modality and Evidentiality in Lithuanian (funded by the Research Council of Lithuania , Grant No. MIP-062/2014). Prof. Dr. Habil. A. Usonien臈.

The main objective of the project is to explore realizations of modality (epistemic and non-epistemic), indirect inferential and reportive evidentiality in Lithuanian and to investigate the phenomena closely related to them (pragmaticalization, adverbialization and (inter)subjectivity). The analysis is corpus-based. Use is made of the Corpus of Academic Lithuanian, the bidirectional parallel corpus ParaCorpEN-LT-EN, the concordances of Old Lithuanian texts (16th鈥17th centuries).

Language Usage, Language Learning and Teaching. Prof. M. Ramonien臈. 2016鈥2026.

Analysis of language usage, language attitudes, language learning, teaching and language policy was carried out. The following areas were examined: socially significant changes in the use of Lithuanian and local vernaculars, evolving levels of multilingualism and local language in cities and towns of Lithuania and in Lithuanian diaspora as well as analysis of communicative and sociocultural competence in use of Lithuanian. On the basis of this research new teaching materials and guidelines for teaching and learning Lithuanian as a second language are being prepared. The department organised the 4th international conference of Applied Linguistics.

Research Council of Lithuania. Algirdas Julius Greimas: Person. Dr. J. Katkuvien臈, 2016鈥2017.

The Project is volume I of the book Algirdas Julius Greimas: The Self and Ideas, which is in preparation. The goal of the book is to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Greimas in 2017 (UNESCO has included the birthday of Greimas in to the list of events to commemorate.).
Volume I is devoted to a thorough presentation of the personality of Greimas. It includes facts, thoughts and testimonies, which the Lithuanian audience knew only in fragments or not at all. It consists of Greimas鈥 interviews in French and Lithuania, his letters to friends and colleagues, the memoires of his pupils, family members, colleagues and friends, and first exhaustive biography of Greimas.

Algirdas Julien Greimas: Ideas. Prof. Habil. Dr. A. Sverdiolas, 2016鈥2018.

This project aims at a systematic examination and reflective reevaluation of the heritage of Algirdas Julius Greimas, comprising scholarly work, cultural studies, and journalism, which will provide a context for presenting Greimassian semiotic mythology as a methodologically coherent investigation. The project sets to examine and assess Greimas鈥檚 texts of primary importance that have not attracted scholarly attention or have been interpreted in reductive terms. It will also reflect on the theoretical and methodological potential and vitality of the contemporary branches of semiotics grounded on Greimassian methods, as well as reconsidering current issues in contemporary semiotics. The scholarly heritage of Greimas will be presented to the Lithuanian and international public at a number of events celebrating the centenary of Greimas鈥檚 birth. The results of this fundamental scholarship will be published in the form of a co-authored monograph.
