International Research Projects

Research project: Death Taboo as a Decisive Construct in The Chinese Culture and Economics: the Case of Life Insurance in Taiwan. Short-Term Research Award (Stra 2017) *. Dr. A. Ulbinait臈.

*This work has been supported by Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in cooperation with National Taipei University of Technology in Taipei, under the academic guidance of Distinguished Professor Jung-Fa Tsai.

This research employs Ajzen鈥檚 approach and methodology of theory of planned behaviour and results in a multiple linear regression model that reveals the determinants and their respective weights in terms of the Taiwanese intentions and behaviour towards purchasing life insurance on short-term. Additionally, this research discusses the sub-questions of how life insurance can find its way to and get integrated in one鈥檚 life, what ways of selling life insurance products in the death-mention sensible Taiwanese market are, as well as how we can define a culturally acceptable view on the problem and derive its solution. Result of the project, an extended research study, is submitted to the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

National Research Projects

Research Council of Lithuania. Modelling of Participation Strategy in the Second Pillar Pensions System. (Project No. MIP-012/2015). Project coordinator: 91桃色. Assoc. Prof. T. Gudaitis. 2015鈥2018.

This research project evaluates the Lithuanian second pillar pension system from the point of view of an individual participant. The goal of the research is to evaluate whether the participants who joined second pillar pension system in 2004 and retire at the beginning of the year 2019 made the beneficial decision and increase their retirement income. Analysis was based on the historical results and data of pension accumulation of a 12-year period from 2004 until the end of 2015 with forecasted continuation of participation for the 2016鈥2018 period based on the methodology prepared by the authors. The results demonstrate that participation in the fully funded second pillar pension system, compared with non-participation, may in general be assessed as positive and effective.

Effectiveness of Economic and Social Policy: Modernisation, Growth and Globalisation. Prof. A. Mi拧kinis.

The case of the three Baltic States was selected. The case of Estonia revealed that if country exports more high technology and machinery products, it is supposed to be less influenced by external influences and more dependent on internal resources and capabilities.

The second topic of research aimed at assessing the fitness of a genetic algorithm approach in optimizing the investment portfolio. The research results showed that the genetic algorithm-based portfolio in 2013 reached a better risk-return ratio than the portfolio optimized by the deterministic and stochastic programing methods. Also, better outcomes were achieved in comparison with the OMX Baltic Market Index. As a result, the hypothesis of the superiority of a portfolio, optimized on the basis of a genetic algorithm, is not rejected. However, further research should include more trial periods as the current study examined a period of one year.

The third topic aims at investigation of fundamental determinants of housing prices which affect housing demand and supply. The results showed that inflation, interest rate and emigration are not causal determinants of housing prices, which mostly depend on GDP, unemployment, the means of macroprudential policy and the average housing prices in the previous period.
