The linguists of the department carry out this research in close collaboration with their colleagues based at the departments of German Philology, the Lithuanian language and the Centre of Scandinavian studies. The focus of the research is on the synchronic and diachronic analysis of language-specific features characteristic of the grammatical, lexical and semantic structure of the languages under study. The range of research methods used and theoretical approaches followed varies greatly: from purely descriptive to functional, from cognitive to socio-linguistic, from quantitative to qualitative analysis of authentic language data.

Lithuanian Literature and Studies of Culture. Prof. D. Poci奴t臈 Abukevi膷ien臈. 2007鈥2017.
The project Christianity and Contemporary Lithuanian Literature (the collective monograph) is an extension of the project Theological Aspects of Lithuanian Literature (monograph) (2011鈥2013), funded by a grant (Nr. LIT-4-12) from the Research Council of Lithuania. The latter Project鈥檚 result is Dalia Ciocyte鈥檚 monograph Theology of Literature: Theological Aspects of Lithuanian Literature; it presents the theoretical perspective of theology of literature and the typology of the theological thought of Lithuanian literature. On the basis of this previous study, a new Project aims to examine the Christian values and attitudes in the literature of the Independent Lithuania (since 1990). The result of the study will be the collective monograph Christianity and Contemporary Lithuanian Literature.

Research Council of Lithuania. Algirdas Julius Greimas: Person. Dr. J. Katkuvien臈, 2016鈥2017.
The goal of the project was a preparation and publication of the volume 1 of the book Algirdas Julius Greimas: The Self and Ideas. The book is dedicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Greimas in 2017 (UNESCO has included the birthday of Greimas in to the list of events to commemorate. The Lithuanian Parliament Comiteee of Education, Science and Culture ploclaimed the year 2017 the national Greimas鈥 year).
Research Council of Lithuania. Algirdas Julien Greimas: Ideas. Prof. Habil. Dr. A. Sverdiolas, 2016鈥2018.
This project aims at a systematic examination and reflective revaluation of the heritage of Algirdas Julius Greimas, comprising scholarly work, cultural studies, and journalism, which will provide a context for presenting Greimassian semiotic mythology as a methodologically coherent investigation. The project sets to examine and assess Greimas鈥檚 texts of primary importance that have not attracted scholarly attention or have been interpreted in reductive terms. It will also reflect on the theoretical and methodological potential and vitality of the contemporary branches of semiotics grounded on Greimassian methods, as well as reconsidering current issues in contemporary semiotics. The scholarly heritage of Greimas will be presented to the Lithuanian and international public at a number of events celebrating the centenary of Greimas鈥 birth.
Research Council of Lithuania. Microhistory of The Voices of Spring: Genetic Reconstruction of Modernization of Lithuanian Texts. Prof. P. Suba膷ius. 2017鈥2019.
Development lasting four decades (since the first published verses in 1885 until 1927) witness the efforts to adapt to the linguistic, ideological and aesthetic modernization, which coincided with the period of Maironis鈥 creative and social activity. The project targets at a paradoxical gap 鈥 although much has been written about Maironis, critics usually heed to the final result of his work only. Author鈥檚 decision to re鈥恊dit the sole collection of the verses The Voices of Spring go with the methodology of genetic criticism in the best way. The project aims to carry out a genetic reconstruction, to present the facsimiles, to publish the XML鈥恊ncoded versions and commentaries employing a single critical archive, i.e. a comprehensive digital platform, synthesising academic and popularisation functions.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Assoc. Prof. Dr. A. Janulien臈. 2015鈥2020.
The research in 2017 was focused on generative syntax, the aspectual projection in Russian and Lithuanian, the interchange in the layout of the reflexive/ reciprocal marker and the verb in prefixed and prefixless Lithuanian verbs. The academic staff of the Department also analysed issues of Legal English, namely, the use of phrasal verbs in the textof the Treaty of Lisbon. Lithuanian students writing in English, the use of then have been investigated. The data for the study were extracted from three Lithuanian sub-corpora of learner English. Associate professor Dr. L.Bikeliene has been involved in the compilation of the Lithuanian part of The Corpus of Academic Learner English (CALE).
The research in the field of cognitive linguistics included the analysis of "self" and "other" metaphors as the strategy of persuasion in populism discourse. The role of migration metaphors and their ideological representation based on the dichotomy of 鈥榰s鈥 vs. 鈥榯hem鈥 in contributing to the myth creation in the US and EU mainstream online media on the topic of 2015 EU migration was also discussed.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Prof. Dr. R. Kriau膷i奴nien臈. 2015鈥2020.
One of the research trends of the Department is the analysis of structural and functional characteristics of the Germanic and Lithuanian languages. Morphemic structure and formation of nominal words with neoclassical elements in the contemporary Lithuanian by the application of synchronic linguistic analysis has been investigated, paying special attention to directly and indirectly borrowed verbal derivational affixes in Lithuanian. This year the research has been expanded to loan adjective formations and adjective borrowings in the Baltic, Slavic, and Germanic languages, as well as the study of lexical expansion of the current English lexicon by novel lexical items.

Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of the Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Assoc. Prof. Dr. D. Jarmalavi膷ius. 2015鈥2020.
The current research includes analysis of the German nominal compounds in the handwritten Baltic bilingual dictionaries from the 17th鈥18th centuries with the following problematic aspects identified: on the one hand, the lack of precise terminology which needs to be corrected in the synchronic theory of word-formation, on the other hand, difficulties in the differentiation of the word-formation patterns. In the scientific literature terminology used for the analogous examples of word-formation could be defined as superfluous.

Research in Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Literatures and Cultures. Prof. Dr. D. Melnikien臈. 2015鈥2020.
Research included analysis of some aspects of bilingual lexicology, such as French and Lithuanian onomatopoeiae, which in a way imitate the sounds of the surrounding world. Various aspects of this phenomenon have been analysed, those connected not only with lexicology, lexicography, but language philosophy and search of a proto-language as well.
Another area of the research of the Department is media linguistics. The recent studies focus on the rhetorical strategies (by Peter Ibarra and John Kitsuse) that allowed the authors of the mediatexts to introduce different types of a language game, in which the actions are interpreted for the readers into legible expressions.

Research in Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Literatures and Cultures.
The research field has been represented by the analysis of cultural aspects of the novel 鈥淪angre y arena鈥 (Blood and sand) by the Spanish novelist Vicente Blasco Ib谩帽ez (1867鈥1928), Due to a diversity of historical circumstances, Spanish literature found its way to the Baltic countries very gradually. However, the works of Vicente Blasco Ib谩帽ez were widely translated in Russia and the three Baltic republics. This study analyses to what extent the cultural aspects of the novel that is so full of cultural references and exerted such attraction for the distant Baltic lands and Russia, have been rendered in two Lithuanian translations.
