National Research Projects

Research Council of Lithuania. Court Record Books of the Lithuanian Metrica: in the Direction of the Second Statute of Lithuania (No. LIP-002/2016). Prof. I. Valikonyt臈. 2016鈥2018.

The aim of the project is to explore an issue which did not receive much reflection in the Lithuanian and foreign historiography, i.e. justice and trial of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the 1st half of the 16th century also legal culture and consciousness of noblemen of the GDL by analysing not only the norms of the Lithuanian Statute (this is typical for legal historians), but the application of the norms as well, which could be best seen from the cases made in the so-called Court Records Books of Lithuanian Metrica (LM).

Research Council of Lithuania. Members of the Catholic Male Religious Orders in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Corpus of Biographical (No. MIP-17-34). Prof. R. Witkowski. 2017鈥2020.

The aim of the project is to prepare the corpus of structured biographical entries comprising the members of Catholic male religious orders and congregations, active in the GDL, from 1387 to 1795. In 2017, according to the plan, designing of the digital data base was implemented, and research in the libraries and archives of Lithuania was conducted.

Research Council of Lithuania. Overland Routes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 13th鈥18th Century: Structure, Architecture, Maintenance and Functionality (No. MIP-17-43). Dr. T. 膶elkis. 2017鈥2020.

The structure of Lithuania鈥檚 overland routes in the 13th鈥搕he first half of the 15th century will be discussed in the project. Its dynamics depends on politic, social and economic development of the territory. Location of the water roads was ordered by the nature and adaptability, while overland routs were made purposeful and testified traces of human life.

RESEARCH PROJECTS CARRIED OUT IN 2018

National Research Projects

Research Council of Lithuania. Landscape of the Statehood: Environment Transformations in the Historical Capitals of Lithuania (No. S-MIP-1736). Prof. A. Kuncevi膷ius. 2017鈥2019.

Aims of the project: identification of the scale and character of environmental transformations in the historical capitals of Lithuania 鈥 Kernav臈 and Trakai (territories of Senieji Trakai castle and settlement, Trakai Peninsular castle), analyzing the results in comparison with Vilnius data and interpretation in the context of genesis of the State; application and promotion of complex, interdisciplinary and non-destructive methods.

Research Council of Lithuania. The Residents of Vilnius Castles in the 14th鈥18th Centuries: Social Structure and Everyday Life According Zooarchaeological, Zrchaeological and Historical Data (No. LIP-015/2016). Dr. P. Bla啪evi膷ius. 2016鈥2018.

Around 52 700 fragments of animal bones, found during the archaeological excavations in Vilnius Castle complex during the year 1988鈥2016, were investigated and identified. More than 1300 finished objects, semi-finished products and production wastes of bone and antler were analyzed. Research of the written sources, conducted in the archives and the libraries of Lithuania and Poland, allowed assembling a meaningful base of data expanding the context for the archaeological material.
Publications: 3 scientific articles published.

According to the plan of the research the historiographical analysis of the theme was performed as well as published sources were analysed.

Contract with the Dignitary Protection Department under the Ministry of the Interior

Analysis of archival sources and historiography was carried out; the main witnesses of the events were interviewed. According to the collected information and data, a scientific monograph was prepared, revealing the history of the department history from the oldest times to 2017.

International Research Projects

Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe. Developing Jewish Studies in Lithuania: Establishing the Research and Teaching Field in 91桃色 (Grant No. 086/14). Assoc. Prof. J. Verbickien臈. 2014鈥2018.

The main goal of the project is to establish and develop Jewish Studies in Faculty of History (91桃色). It will focus on expanding and defining subjects of the field, making them more available for students and laying grounds for the future research projects. This project would open ways to promote young researchers research and career progress. These young perspective scholars will have the chance to continue with their training as young lecturers and remain engaged in the field by specializing in the study of history and culture of the East European Jews with a special focus being Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the history of Lithuanian Jewry and its specificities. In 2018, two round table discussion were held: 鈥淭eaching Jewish History and Culture at Universities: Exchange of Experiences and New Visions鈥 (with Francois Guesnet ,University College London, UK).

Research Council of Lithuania. Augustinas Voldemaras. Intellectual and Social Biography (No. S-LIP-18-44). Assoc. Prof. A. Gieda. 2018鈥2021.

The object of the research is the intellectual and social biography of one of the most controversial personalities of inter-war Lithuania Augustinas Voldemaras (1883鈥1942). The aim of the project is to prepare and publish a monograph. The research will be based on the documents and manuscript material, associated with Voldemaras (documents of university activity, correspondence, memoirs, unpublished manuscripts etc.), from the archives of Lithuania, Russia and France. In 2018, material for monograph was collected in the archives and libraries of St. Petersburg, Klaip臈da and Vilnius.

The aim of the project is to prepare a manuscript for the publication devoted to the biography of Jonas Basanavi膷ius (1851鈥1927). Basanavi膷ius could be treated as the main founder of modern Lithuanain ideology and one of the main pillars (along with Vincas Kudirka and Jonas Jablonskis) of modern Lithuanianism. In 2018, the manuscript of the monograph on Jonas Basanavi膷ius was prepared.

Research Council of Lithuania. Housing Architecture in Soviet Lithuania: between the Mass and the Individual (No. S-MOD-17-21). Assoc. Prof. M. Dr臈mait臈. 2017鈥2019.

The project is aimed at comprehensive research of different forms of housing during the soviet period in Lithuania, 1940鈥1990. The project combines art history and history to investigate the living environment and living conditions. The results of the research will be published in 3 academic papers and a monograph.

Research Council of Lithuania. Museum - the Space of Polylogue between Dominant and Alternative Narratives: From Theory to Practice ( No. P-LU-18-66). Assoc. Prof. R. 艩ermuk拧nyt臈. 2018鈥2019.

The shaping of historical memory in the Ukrainian society is accompanied by a set of problems, among which the most important is the problem of determining identity in a diverse and contradictory world; positive acceptance and respect for the choices of others, integration and consolidation of community, based on human values. Taking into account the fact that the past continues to be the subject of political manipulations and means of social disintegration, an important task of a historical museum is social understanding and reconciliation regarding the controversial and sensitive pages of historical memory. Objectives of proposed project: (1) to identify related museums exhibitions in Ukraine and analyse them as narratives (using comparativist approach); aspects of analysis: (a) interaction between dominated and alternative narratives, (b) representation of common European values, (c) tendencies of cultural memory and memory policy; (2) on the base of the above study to present practical recommendations, how to update museum narratives in Ukraine; (3) to spread results of the project for wider public (museum employees, museum policy makers), to organise interdisciplinary discussion on the related topic. During stage 2 of the project (2019), it is planned to supplement these texts with recommendations and to publish a scientific study in the Lithuanian and Ukrainian languages.

The main aim is the comparative historical sociological analysis of the transformation of Vilnius, Kaunas and Grodno (North-western land provinces) from traditional urban ecology and sanitary-hygienic (unregulated) system to modern (regulated) system in 1870鈥1914, in the context of European cities modernization.
