Chromatographic and Electromigrative Techniques: Development and Application of New Preconcentration and Separation Systems. Prof. A. Padarauskas. 20112015.

A reliable, sensitive and rapid method for determination of nicotine and three minor alkaloids (cotinine, anabasine and nornicotine) in tobacco by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography in hydrophilic interaction chromatography mode coupled with tandem mass spectrometry has been established. The performance of the proposed method was tested for the extraction and determination of the four alkaloids in cigarette tobacco and satisfactory results were achieved.
Ultra performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array dedector was employed for the identification of main constituents of natural dyes. The dyestuffs investigated were the following: luteolin, apigenin, quercetin, rutin, gallic acid, carminic acid, alizarin, purpurin and indigotin. The method was applied for the identification of dye compounds in historical textiles samples.
Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric method for the identification and determination of organotin compounds in aqueous solutions has been employed. Prior to the analysis organotin compounds were derivatized using sodium tetraethylborate as derivatization reagent. For the extraction of derivatized organotin compounds, hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction method has been suggested and the extraction conditions have been optimized.

Investigation of Instrumental Methods of Analysis of Environmental, Industrial, Biological and Cultural Heritage Objects. Prof. S. Tautkus. 20112015.

Nanotechnology has recently become one of the most exciting forefront fields offering technological advantages suitable for analytical chemistry. In some cases a combination of nanomaterials and nanotechnological approches resolves challenging bioanalytical problems, including specificity, stability and sensitivity.
Different glucose biosensors based on glucose oxidase immobilised on bare carbon rod electrode modified with gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) of 3.5 nm, 6 nm and 13 nm were investigated. Enzymatic polymerisation of pyrrole was applied to increase linear detection range of biosensors. The influence of the formed polypyrrole layer on sensitivity and Michaelis-Menten kinetics of designed electrochemical biosensors was investigated, The linear glucose detection interval depends on the duration of polymerisation. The sensitivity of analytical systems modified with polypyrrole depended on the sizes of Au-NPs. Smaller Au-NPs based systems exhibited higher amperometric responses at the same concentration of glucose before and after the formation of polypyrrole layer.
Number of immunosensors based on different antigen and antibody interaction registration techniques such as surface plasmon resonance, quartz microbalance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical technique, atomic force microscopy, total internal reflection ellipsometry and some others ewre used for registration of antigen and antibody interaction. Another very promising technique is surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which can detect picomoles to femtomoles of analyte in the samples. This phenomenon provides a highly specific and sensitive strategy for molecular identification and promotes the wide developments of SERS-based sensors using noble metal nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Au and Pt). In our study magnetic gold nanoparticle (MNP-Au) and gold nanorods (Au-NRs) were used in SERS-based sandwich immunoaasay for bovine leukemia virus antigen detection. The native and fragmented specific antibodies were immobilized on MNP-Au. The antibody immobilization and antigen capturing efficiency were recorded by high performance liquid applied for the enhancement of analytical signal after immune complex with analyte formation on MNP-Au. The sensitiviti of the developed assay was investigated and compared.
The aim-to investigate of Kernav臈s- Kriveiki拧ki懦 blue, brown and glass beads (XIII-XIV th century) using SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, EDX and ICP-MS analysis. Continuing the work we have chosen less frequently found in the red, blue and brown archaeological glass beads (XIII-XIV century). The materials used in the manufacture of glass are divided into four groups: the main component of glass 鈥 SiO2, compounds, which giving the glass colors, flux, which decreases the melting temperature of the mixture, modifiers, which are added to the melted materials to improve their properties.
EDX and ICP-MS methods showed that all three main components in glass beads are SiO2,
clarification 鈥 MnO, fluxes 鈥 Na2CO3 , PbO and K2CO3 and modifiers of Al2O3. EDX and ICP-MS methods showed that the blue colour for the samples No.1 and No.2 are giving Co2+ and Fe3+ ions, for the sample No.3 鈥 Ag+ ions, the brown colour for the sample No.4 鈥 Fe2+/Fe3+ ions, the red colour for the sample No.5 鈥 Cu2+ ions. OM and SEM bead core cross-sectional images showed that the blue samples No.1 and No.2 are damaged by erosion around the bead volume, in the sample blue No.3 is visible only superficial erosion, and the brown and red samples No.4 and No.5 are only slightly damaged. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that the beads have been affected by external and internal erosion, down -P-O-H and 鈥揅=O functional groups include the erosion products that are the result of archaeological environment.
A method for the determination of lead in mushrooms by flame atomic absorption spectro- metry has been suggested. The calibration graph for lead was linear in the range of 0.25鈥4.0 碌g/ml. The effects of various parameters such as air and gas pressure, the influence of nitric acid concentration, the effect of time on the absorbance of lead have been studied. The selectivity of the determination of lead also was studied. The limiting interfering Pb/M ratious (the determination error卤10%) have been determined. According to the interfering effect examined metals are ordered as: Li>Cr, Mn, Mg, Al>Ca>Fe>K, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ba, Na, Bi and Sr.
The proposed procedure was applied to the determination of lead in 3 species of edible mushrooms. The relative standart deviation (n=5) was in the range from 1.2 to 3.7%. The recovery was found to be ranged between 95 and 99%.

Synthesis of graphite oxide using different oxidizing agents. Preparation of graphite oxide membranes on polymer, glass and metal substrates. Preparation of graphene membranes on polymer, glass and metal substrates. Examination of graphite oxide and graphene membranes. Transfer of graphene membranes and coatings. TiO2 nanofilms were deposited by chemical bath deposition method. The influence of solution chemistry on the microstructure of films has been investigated. Zeta potential measurements while varying composition of the solution were performed and a stability of the solution has been evaluated. Furthermore, the influence of the deposition time and metal ion concentration in the solution on the film thickness was also examined. Moreover, the contact angle measurements were performed. Results have shown that wettability of thin films is strongly influenced by the surface morphological properties.
Solvatochromatic properties of fluorenone-based compounds were investigated. The influence of structural changes of molecule on the absorption and emission features was examined, and the effect of solvent polarity on the compound fluorescence intensity has been studied. Results showed that introducing electron donating or withdrawing group into a molecule the stabilization of the electron density of the system can be achieved.
Morphological and structural features of deposited Cu-In-S compounds were investigated. Their physicochemical properties were monitored by introducing various amount of the dopand (Zn, Ni and Sb) in the crystal lattice. A homogeneous distribution of chemical elements has been revealed and electrochemical performance of produced films was evaluated. The results showed that material when Zn is introduced as a dopant hives the best photocatalitic response and that was associated with defects present in the crystal lattice.
The calcination and systematic characterization of hydroxyapaptite (HA) precursor and sintered powders were performed. Materials were calcined using different annealing regimes. The influence of time annealing regime on the crystallinity of material was analyzed. Furthermore, the relationship between calcination time and the carbonate amount present in the HA lattice was evaluated. Results showed that increasing annealing time the carbonate amount diminishes.
The synthesis of Al2(MoxW1-xO4)3 compounds doped with Eu2O3 using both aqueous sol-gel technique and liquid state plasma method was successfully performed. The crystal structure and surface morphology of obtained materials were also investigated by XRD and SEM techniques. The elemental analysis and particle size distribution measurements showed that liquid state plasma method is a good tool in order to obtain micro-sized spherical particles. Besides, sol-gel technique was successfully applied for the preparation of La-Mo-Eu-O tartrate gel precursors using different starting compounds. The optical properties of synthesized gels with initial composition of La2Mo3O12:xEu3+ by UV-Vis spectroscopy were investigated. The results let us to conclude, that the origin of starting materials significantly influences the reflectance of final europium doped ceramic compounds. Moreover, the efforts to obtain of both Ga2Mo3O12 and Ga2W3O12 oxides also were made. In despite, no positive evidences of crystal phases of desirable compounds were achieved. Finally, the thermal behaviour of ZnMoxW1-xO4 citrate and tartrate gels by TG/DSC analysis were investigated.
YAG powders substituted by samarium were prepared by simple an aqueous sol-gel method. It was demonstrated, however, that the total substitution of yttrium by samarium does not proceed in the YAG. Pure cubic garnet phase was formed only at low concentration of samarium. Different aqueous sol-gel chemistry routes based on phosphoric acid or ammonium鈥揾ydrogen phosphate as the phosphorus precursors, calcium acetate monohydrate as source of calcium ions have been used to prepare calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp). A single-walled carbon nanotubes and silica (SWNTs/Silica) composite coatings were prepared by sol-gel method using spin-coating technique. Methyl鈥搈odified silica coatings were structured on the surface of copper and steel.
Various functional oxide layers have been MOCVD grown and investigated: high-k dielectric, high temperature superconductors, photocatalytic, magnetoresistant layers, and multilayered structures. Technological developments of MOCVD and Aerosol-pyrolysis techniques were carried out.
High-frequency admittance analysis of quartz resonator in contact with aqueous solution of sodium hexafluorophosphate has shown that adsorption of this anion can be neglected and the potential dependent changes of resonant frequencies of dual-piezoelectric resonator can be assigned to the changes of interfacial water viscosity and density with potential. When piezoelectric resonator measurements are performed in the solutions of more strongly adsorbing anions, the changes of resonant frequencies changes with potential can also be used to estimate interfacial water viscosity. However, the effects of anion adsorption must be first evaluated and taken into account when calculating water viscosity from frequency changes.

New sensing platform based on modified glassy carbon (GC) suitable for design of heavy metal-ion sensor is reported in this study. GC-based electrodes were electrochemically modified by poly-5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline (poly-5NP) and poly-5-amino, 6-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline (poly-5A6NP) layers. Grafting of electrochemically formed poly-5NP and poly-5A6NP layers at the GC electrode surface was confirmed by electrochemical reduction of nitro groups into amine groups. Presence of grafted poly- 5NP and poly-5A6NP layers and formation of their reduced forms on the GC electrode surface were verified by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The applicability of poly-5NP- and poly-5A6NPfunctionalized carbon surfaces for the determination of Cu(II) ions was demonstrated by formation of complexes between GC-grafted poly-5NP and poly-5A6NP layers and Cu(II) ions.
The obtained oxide films are continuous, amorphous, and the smoothest surface is obtained after Ti anodizing in 2 M H3PO4+0.05 M NH4F solution. At concentration of NH4F 0.2M, the nanotubes of TiO2 are formed at the temperatures 10-20掳C and AP=20V. The length of nanotubes determined by FIB technique is in the range 650-730 nm, and the diameter of pores is 60-80 nm. The photocurrents and photopotentials correlate with fluorine incorporation into film, and the values of ones were obtained for films not included fluorine, i.e. for films obtained in pure 2M H3PO4. The anodic photovoltage up to 2 V (at constant current 1 mA/cm2) and photocurrent up to 5 mA/cm2 (at constant anodic potential 1.8 V) have been detected in 0.05M NaOH solution.
Nanocrystalline Co-W coatings with 13鈥36 at.% W were obtained from citrate-borate electrolyte under DC and PC plating conditions. A crystalline structure is obtained when the tungsten content is in the range of 13 to 20.8 at.% W. In this case coatings present a mixture of two crystalline phases: W solid solution in hcp Co and a small quantity of Co with fcc structure. When the quantity of W exceeds 21鈥22 at.% the lattice constants of hcp Co gain values characteristic for those of Co3W. The influence of annealing temperature on the structure of Co-W alloys having 24.5 at.%% and 34.4 at.% has been investigated. In coatings containing 24.5 at.% W, a well developed polycrystalline structure of Co3W appears at 400 掳C with {200}, {201} and {220} textures. On the contrary, Co-W coatings with a high tungsten content of 34.4 at.% W maintain their grain size at 400 掳C, and a recrystallization into a polycrystalline Co3W structure occurs above 600 掳C. At 800 掳C, a dominating {201} texture develops. The polycrystalline structure remains stable on further heating up to 1000 掳C. The grain size increases during heating from 3-5 nm up to 47鈥53 nm.
The properties of thiol self-assembled monolayer HC18 (SAM) formed on gold substrate are researched. Long term stability of surface properties in ethanol and water is evaluated. With a goal of finding a method for removal of SAMs without altering of surface structure and morphology electrochemical oxidation in acidic solution (0.1 M H2SO4) and electrochemical reduction in basic solution (0.5 M NaOH) is performed using cyclic voltammetry. In addition properties are researched using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Quartz Crystal Micro Balance. It was determined that long term exposure to ethanol reversibly desorbs one third of initial SAM molecules. If specimen is again immersed in thiol solution its properties return to initial state. In addition it was determined that when SAM is exposed to water SAM structure is penetrated by water molecules to an extensive degree. Properties of surface can be significantly altered by this effect. Another point made in this work is that thiol can be removed using electrochemical oxidation. For an effective removal the procedures duration must be over 3 hours, however. During electrochemical reduction desorbed SAM molecules do not leave surface region, thus, once the experiment is finished they adsorb back on the surface. Furthermore, during degradation of SAM its covered area does not change only layer鈥檚 average thickness. This effect is observed provided that there are enough thiol molecules to cover the area.

Design and Synthesis of New Organic Materials, Investigation of their Properties and Self-Assembling, Application in Optoelectronics and Biochemistry. Prof. E. Butkus, Prof. S. Tumkevi膷ius. 2009鈥2013.

Highly regioselective oxygen transfer from nitro groups to carbon-carbon triple bonds has been achieved by employment of iodine monochloride or molecular iodine. The precursors are heterocyclic or aromatic compounds, each bearing a nitro group ortho to an internal alkyne. The developed methodology is general for the preparation of a wide range of fused isoxazoles. A three-component reaction among 2-alkynylquinoline-3-carbaldehydes, primary amines, and C- or P-pronucleophiles leading to novel 1,2-dihydrobenzo[b][1,6]naphthyridines was developed using microwave initiation in an absence of any catalysts. A facile, economic, and efficient protocol for the reduction of nonconjugated 螖2-isoxazolines to the corresponding 尾-hydroxy ketones using Al/CuCl2 as the reducing agent has been developed. Novel 4,6-diamino- and 2-aminopyrimidines from the corresponding chloro derivatives via N-nitrosoamine intermediates were synthesized.
Cyclization reactions of pyrimidine derivatives to form furo-, pyrrolo- and pyrazolopyrimidines were studied. Investigation of the reactions of the obtained heterocycles with bifunctionalized reagents led to the development of a simple and efficient synthesis of novel ortho- and peri-annulated heterocyclic systems鈥2,6,7,9-tetrahydro-8H-pyrazolo[5,4,3-de]pyrimido[4,5-e][1,4]diazepine, 2,6,7,9-tetrahydro-8H-pyrazolo[5,4,3-de]pyrimido[5,4-f][1,4]thiazepine, and 6,9-dihydro-2H-pyrazolo[3,4,5-ef]pyrimido[5,4-f][1,2,4]triazepine. Mitsunobu reaction of (furo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-5-yl)methanol with N-mesyl- or N-nosylarylamines was investigated. Some arylpyrimidines were found to exhibit strong blue fluorescence. Synthesis of fused nitrogen heterocycles containing the bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane framework has been accomplished. Synthesis of organic tertiary amonium salts was carried out and their effect on obsolescence and disintegration processes of paper (cellulose) has been studied. Enzymes of vegetables of the family Apiaceae were found to be promising catalysts for the enantioselective reduction of bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione.
The syntheses and crystal structures of unsaturated bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives containing various functionalities were performed and their intermolecular interactions examined. The unsaturation and hydrogen bonds in the bicyclononane diene diol, in the dienone, the bromo and nitrile derivatives were found significant for the overall crystal structure and intermolecular networks. The two bromine atoms have significant halogen鈥揾alogen interactions. In several structures 2D nets can be identified and overall structures can be interpreted as close packing of these layers. A synthesis of diastereomeric bicyclic dibenzoyl esters derived from enantiomerically pure (1S,5S)-bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione was accomplished. Chiroptical properties were studied and diastereomeric esters exhibited exciton couplets in the circular dichroism spectra because of transannular interaction between non-conjugated benzoate chromophores. Theoretical computation of the CD spectra of diastereomers correctly reproduced the sign of the exciton couplets in the studied molecules. The enantiomer resolution of N-protected 9-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-diols was achieved by crystallization of their diastereomeric esters derived from (1S)-(鈭)-camphanic chloride. The enantiomers of N-Boc protected diol were converted into the corresponding enantiomerically pure diones, the absolute configuration of which was inferred from the TDDFT calculations of the electronic circular dichroism spectra (ECD) and was confirmed via analysis of the CD spectra of the diol dibenzoates and application of the benzoate exciton chirality method.

Projects Supported by University Budget

Synthesis and Study of Hydrophilic Polymers for Bio- and Nanotechnologies. Prof. R. Maku拧ka,2011鈥2015.

New technique of ATRP including intermediate for supplemental activators and reducing agents was developed and tested under polymerization of cationic monomers. Newly proposed intermediate redox system contained iron or copper and oxidized ascorbic acid or iron (III) chloride. Cationic monomer METAC was polymerized by eATRP. Electrochemically mediated ATRP of METAC revealed relatively less control of polymerization under eATRP conditions compared to ARGET ATRP. Several types of multifunctional RAFT chain transfer agents were synthesized and used for the synthesis of multiblock copolymers. Complexation of chitosan and chlorophyllin was studied by turbidimetric measurements and DLS. It was determined that photoactivated chlorophyllin-deficient complex in slightly acidic environment was very efficient antibacterial material against Gram (-) bacteria. New type of poly(urethane urea) (PUU) microparticles based on of poly(vinyl alcohol) and 4,4鈥-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) was synthesized. The effects of initial molar ratio of the components, reaction time and temperature on yield of PUU, quantity of functional groups, thermal properties, surface area and pore size distribution of microparticles were studied. PUU microparticles were used as carriers for immobilization of maltogenase.
