Research of the Beginnings of the Baltic Identity. Doc. A. Merkevi膷ius. 2011鈥�2015.

Archaeological excavations were carried in the Eastern Lithuania (Dubingiai, Mol臈tai district; Kernav臈, 艩irvintos district), in Central Lithuania (Skaruliai, Jonava district), in Western Lithuania (Ka拧u膷iai, Kretinga district; the environs of Klaip臈da town). The 13th vol. of Archaeologia Lituana was published.

Lithuanian Culture: History, Heritage and Memory Prof. A. Bumblauskas. 2010鈥�2020.

This project analyzes cultural processes of the society of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, as well as the society of the 19th鈥�21st c. and it investigates historical culture of the ethnic and confessional minorities, tendencies of the contemporary historical culture. Moreover, the project seeks to study issues of individual and collective memory, functioning of history in everyday life. Finally, it pays attention to the problems of cultural heritage conservation theory and practice in Lithuania and World.
Second reviewed edition of synthetic history of 91桃色 Alma Mater Vilnensis: Vilniaus universiteto istorijos bruo啪ai (ed. Prof. A. Bumblauskas) was published in 2012. Research fellow I. Leonavi膷i奴t臈 created new visual material and scheme and completed two new chapters (鈥淗onorary doctors of the Imperial University of Vilnius鈥� and 鈥淟ithuanian Science award winners from the 91桃色鈥�). The list of the Rectors of 91桃色 was revised and completed. It serves as a basis for producing a memorial plate for 91桃色.

The project aims to stimulate, expand and integrate theoretical, historical, sociological and philological research on:
Identities of modern states which emerged from the Polish鈥揕ithuanian Commonwealth: Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine;
History of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania;
Identities of ethnic groups 鈥� Lithuanians, Poles, Ruthenians, Jews, Tartars, Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians in the 14th鈥�21st centuries
International conference Phenomena of History and Tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Places of Nations Memory, 15th鈥�16th of November, 2012, Vilnius. The goal of the conference was to summarize the results of the project.

Project: Environmental Change and Indigenous Adaptations in East Siberia: Power Relations and Economy of Luck. Doc. D. Brandi拧auskas. 2012鈥�2014.

This project aims at producing an ethnographic study revealing how social and natural change affected lifestyles of indigenous people in East Siberia (Zabaikal County, Buriatia and Amur Region). Based on proposed and previous fieldwork research (2004鈥�2014), comparative and ethnographic sources this study will analyze a shift of economic, political and cultural life of indigenous people living in the north over last few decades. Theoretical discussions will be based on concepts of phenomenological anthropology investigating how success of subsistence is based on environmental knowledge that is gained through multisensory awareness and enskilment. Primarily, research will analyze a vernacular notion of power that is crucial in understanding indigenous鈥� adaptations to the shifting environment, state policies and economies of luck. This concept is underdeveloped in social anthropology and it is still biased by western understandings. This project will produce several case studies (monograph and three articles) that will illustrate theoretical discussions and enhance our understanding of little studied regions in Russia.

Project: Making People Aware of the GDL Heritage. Doc. G. Kirkien臈. 2012.

Project seeks the following main goals:
1. Encourage collaboration of the region鈥檚 scientists (neighbouring countries - Belorussia and the Ukraine) in the field of research and popularization of the GDL鈥檚 history and heritage; develop multiperspective and dialogic historical consciousness of the region鈥檚 scientists and culturists; surmount attitudes of nationalized partition towards the GDL鈥檚 heritage.
2. Actualize the GDL鈥檚 heritage for tourism, cultural exchange, for purposes of the European identity formation and good neighbourhood policy in Lithuania and neighbouring countries.
In order to achieve these goals, the project is being implemented on the levels of information, academic research and promotion of the scientific investigations.
The new academic book Radvilos: Lietuva, Baltarusija, Ukraina (The Radziwillows: Lithuania, Belorussia, the Ukraine) for the Ukrainian society is planned to be published together with the Ukrainian and Belorussian historians. The idea of the book is to show one of the most prominent and influential noble Lithuanian Radziwillow family history and heritage, which unites the neighbourhood, even four countries 鈥� Lithuania, Belorussia, the Ukraine and Poland.

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the East and Central Europe. Prof. Dr. R. Petrauskas. 2009鈥�2013.

Society and the state, studies of historical sources and auxiliary disciplines of history.
Research and publication of Lithuanian Statute, Lithuanian Metrica and sources of the enlightenment.
The research of the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is carried out in the context of the history of the East and Central Europe. The main research problem is the development of the social structures and political institutions in the 13th鈥�18th centuries. The works are related with the publication and study of the principal source to get acquainted with the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Metrica. Publications in foreign periodicals, translations into foreign languages witness international recognition of the scholars of the Department.
Studies in Historical Sources is a joint project run by the Lithuanian Institute of History and the Faculty of History of 91桃色. The first continuous critical investigation of Historical Sources publication in Lithuania is volume three.

Lithuania During the 19鈥�20th Centuries and Its Neighbours: Ethnic, Political, and Cultural Processes. Prof. Z. Butkus, Doc. A. Jakub膷ionis. 2007鈥�2017.

In 2012, research on Lithuania and Its Neighbours in 19鈥�20th Centuries: Ethnic, Political and Cultural Processes was further carried out, and the results of the previous research were summarized. The research focused on the situation of Lithuania and the 鈥漀ational question鈥� in the Russian Empire. The history of independent Lithuania was analysed in several aspects. Research in the field of ethnic minorities concentrated on the Jewish community of Lithuania, its participation in the local self-government affairs as well as the problems of education of the Lithuanian Jewish community. Significant attention was paid to the international relations and history of diplomacy. The problems of the security and consolidation of the European countries were analysed, paying the main attention to the formation and action of the political and military blocs. The research on the international situation of the Baltic States was carried out while concentrating on the outward influences on the internal politics. Great attention was paid to the role of the Lithuanian political parties in Lithuania鈥檚 foreign policy. In the field of social history the problem of unemployment was researched. Attention was also focused on the research of the Lithuanian Catholic Church in 1918鈥�1940. The cultural situation, the formation of the memory politics and the control of cultural communication in Lithuania during the Soviet period .In 2012, research papers and presentations at the national and international conferences were presented. The Department organized a scientific conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Constitution of Lithuania together with the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

This Centre was established at the Faculty of History by the agreement between 91桃色 and the Open Society Foundation of Lithuania. It aims at introducing courses and study programs, carrying out research on the region鈥檚 stateless minority cultures (cultures that do not benefit from the moral and material support of a 鈥渉ome country鈥� anywhere). These cultures are frequently in danger of disappearance, and their representatives have often been subjected to prejudice, stereotyping and misunderstanding.
Main research areas of the Centre are studies of Yiddish (in cooperation with Vilnius Yiddish Institute), Old Believers, Tatars, Karaimes, Roma and also multicultural studies.
The Centre is developing an academic program of Multicultural Studies.
The Centre for Stateless Cultures offers courses for BA and MA students in History every year. The BA Cultural History and Anthropology Program offers three trends of studies. One of them 鈥� Sociocultural History and Anthropology of Minorities 鈥� is carried out by the Centre for Stateless Cultures.

Project: Tradition, Image and Modern Identity of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Prof. A. Bumblauskas. 2010鈥�2013.

The project aims at stimulating, expanding and integrating theoretical, historical, sociological and philological research on:
Identities of modern states which emerged from the Polish鈥揕ithuanian Commonwealth: Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine;
History of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania;
Identities of ethnic groups 鈥� Lithuanians, Poles, Ruthenians, Jews, Tartars, Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians in the 14th鈥�21st centuries.

Project: From 鈥淪enalietuviai鈥� (鈥渁ntediluvian Lithuanians鈥�) to the Formation of the Modern Lithuanian and Polish Nations in the Lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Vilnius Case. Dr. R. Gaidis. 2012.

The project is based on the educational research backgrounds. It is assigned to those students (Bachelor, Master, PhD), who are interested in the history of Lithuania and Poland. The main stress is put on the inquiry of circumstances, features and interfaces which influenced the formation of modern Lithuanian and Polish nations. It is aspired that students should get acquainted with the historical memory places which are momentous for both nations. Moreover, they should take part in the exploration of those places and they should get and develop their research skills.

The leading aims of the project are to incite intercultural and interethnic dialogue between Lithuania and Poland students; to enable students to get acquainted with how the modern nations evolved, elaborating on what objective and subjective factors impacted them, to elucidate stereotypes and myths sparked off on the backgrounds of the ethnic ideologies and to provoke methods of overcoming them; to endeavour students to acquire practical experience in such fields as historical research, heritage protection, the analysis of archival sources.
